Our Mission

The Research Development CoP is a gathering of professionals from across the organization who want to continue to learn and grow in their research development practice. They do this through inclusive community building, open knowledge sharing, cross-campus translational activities, and a spirit of intentional communication.

Our Scope

This community defines research development into four main areas:

  1. Relationship Building and Facilitation
    • Matchmaking of PIs across campus for scientific teaming
    • Matchmaking of PIs to opportunities
    • Understanding and linking of UW Madison and outside resources available to research teams
    • Development of a campus-wide research facilitation community
    • Facilitation of teaming and partnering (team science)
  2. Holistic Proposal Preparation
    • Proposal development incorporating teaming best practices
    • Understanding and implementation of the proposal as a narrative/story
  3. Capacity Building and Development
    • PI education
  4. Sponsor Partnering and Mapping
    • Sponsor connections
    • Assisting in crafting calls for proposals
    • Provide a “bridge” for Sponsor/PI relations

What is Research Development?

According to the National Organization for Research Development Professionals, Research Developmentencompasses a set of strategic, catalytic, and capacity-building activities that advance research, especially in higher education. Research Development professionals help researchers become more successful communicators, grant writers, and advocates for their research. They help researchers bring new ideas to life.

What is a Community of Practice?

A Community of Practice is a group of individuals who share a common interest in a topic and come together to share knowledge, gain understanding, and build community.

Are Research Administration and Research Development the same thing?

No. Research Development and Research Administration are separate, but often complimentary, fields. Research Development work does NOT include:

  • Submission portal discussions
  • UG or other sponsor guide general updates
  • Compliance concerns
  • Grant administration in the post-award phase
  • Research or laboratory work in and of itself

Who can join the Research Development Community of Practice?

Anyone who works in the field of Research Development across campus, in any capacity, is invited to join, share, and learn.

What level of engagement is expected of me as a member of this CoP?

Being a member of a Community of Practice means you can engage as much, or as little, as you like. Some members will be vocal attendees of every meeting and take on special projects; some will attend occasionally and jump into the group chat every once in a while. Either way, you will be a valued member of the community, and we hope you gain valuable knowledge here.
